Officer of the Year 2022

Officer Nickerline Montina

The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Year” for 2022 is Officer Nickerline Montina, who is a 6-year veteran of the North Miami Police Department, assigned to the Day Shift Uniform Patrol Section. She is also a part of the North Miami Police Honor Guard and is currently in training to become a Traffic Homicide Investigator with the Department. Officer Montina is being recognized for her Courage in the protection of the North Miami community. Courage is defined as the mental or moral strength required to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty, despite personal risk.

In 2022, Officer Montina was dispatched to an alarm call at 685 NE 126 ST. While exiting the listed address, Officer Montina heard multiple gunshots in the area within proximity of her location. She then looked in an eastern direction and observed a male armed with an AR-15 style rifle, shooting his weapon in the direction of an apartment building. Officer Montina realizing she was witnessing an active shooter quickly advised of her observation over the police radio, and without hesitation, proceeded in the direction of the subject, who was still actively shooting the rifle.

As she proceeded towards the danger, the subject noticed Officer Montina, dropped his weapon, and ran on foot. He then quickly doubled-back and picked up the rifle, re-arming himself. Officer Montina advised of the additional developments over the police radio, as the subject ran away. Officer Montina quickly established a perimeter to contain the armed and violent subject. Shortly after the perimeter was established, the male in question was located hiding near a residence and taken into custody. The subject was subsequently charged with Discharging a Firearm in Public, and Shooting/Throwing a Deadly Missile into a Dwelling/Vehicle. Numerous spent casings were found on the roadway and an AR-15 style weapon was found near the residence. Thankfully, no one was injured because of the subject’s blatant disregard for life.

In addition to this heroic act, Officer Montina continues to exemplify the Department’s motto of “Making a Positive Impact” on and off the field. Officer Montina takes the initiative and makes herself available to assist with any assignments presented to her. When a “need” of personnel shortage arises, Officer Montina consistently picks up different shift assignments to supplement the North Miami Police Communications Department and the Uniform Patrol Section. Furthermore, she is the Assistant Coach of P.A.L of North Miami Buccaneers where she assists Head Coach and Officer E. Carter with educating the police cadets with the fundamentals of basketball.

It is for these reasons, Officer Nickerline Montina was selected as the “Officer of the Month” for June 2022 and the North Miami Police “Officer of the Year” for 2022.
