Members of the City of North Miami’s Golden Silver Seniors Program are gearing up for a grand celebration in honor of the 105th birthday of longtime member, Astoud Georges Benjamin, on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m., at the Joe Celestin Center (JCC), located at 1525 NW 135th Street, North Miami.

Affectionately known as “Papa,” Benjamin has been an active member of the North Miami Golden Silver Seniors Program since 2016. His celebration will begin with an escort to the JCC by the North Miami Police Department. Upon arrival, he will be greeted warmly by members of the North Miami City Council. Then, surrounded by family and NoMi Golden Silver Seniors Program friends, Benjamin will enjoy loving reflections by his children and grandchildren, music, dancing, food…and, of course, birthday cake.

Benjamin was born May 19, 1919, in Cotes-de-Fer of Anse-a-Foleur, Haiti. Through the years, he wore many hats, with past work in land development, agriculture and midwifing. He moved to the United States 22 years ago and has called North Miami home since then.

He is the father of 13 children, 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren who adore his love for dance, joking, reciting poetry and making fun-filled memories with family and friends. Benjamin says his secret to a long life is “helping others who are in need and to have a pure heart.”

This event is exclusively for NoMi Golden Silver Seniors Program members. For more information, please call the North Miami Housing and Social Services Department at 305-893-6511, 20007. Media inquiries may be forwarded to Eunicia Baker, Communications Director, at ebaker@NorthMiamiFL.gov.
