North Miami Mayor Renames Street to Honor Resident's Civic Engagement

Mayor Desulme - Press Releases Posted on September 16, 2024

September 12, 2024

Friday, Sept. 13, at 11:00 AM, Alix Desulme, Ed.D., Mayor of North Miami, will host a Street Naming Ceremony Honoring Virginia Gilmore for her years civic engagement.

During the ceremony, Desulme will redesignate NW 120th Street, from NW 16th Avenue to NW 17th Avenue, in Gilmore’s name, to recognize her ongoing community activism throughout her 40+ years as a North Miami resident. Most significantly, Gilmore is recognized among her neighbors for advocating for roadway safety. Gilmore’s advocacy resulted in the installation of a traffic calming circle at NW 16th Avenue and NW 120th Street, which enhanced pedestrian and motorist safety. Gilmore is a known advocate for neighborhood beautification and other initiatives that enhance her community’s quality of life.

Additionally, Gilmore is a wife and mother of four who has called North Miami home since 1981.
