Mayor Alix Desulme Among African American Mayors Association, American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America's 2024 Grant REcipients
May 3, 2024
The City of North Miami’s Mayor, Alix Desulme, Ed.D., was selected among five recipients of the American Beverage Foundation For A Healthy America’s (ABFHA) grant during the African American Mayors Association’s (AAMA) National Conference in Atlanta, GA. Grants were awarded to cities with programs that improve community health. Desulme was recognized for the City’s NoMi Food Pantry, an initiative he created in 2019.
Grant winners were selected by a panel of judges composed of former mayors chosen by AAMA. The City of North Miami received a grant in the amount of $75,000 in the mid-size City category. The program’s grant funding is for city programs that demonstrate measurable progress in areas that include increasing access to affordable basic nutrition needs and educational components that help market the program to a selected mayor’s community; providing community outreach or help educate citizens about the benefits of the program; attracting matching grants or other investment dollars.
“This is an exciting and very rewarding opportunity for the City of North Miami,” said Desulme. “For more than five years, the NoMi Food Pantry has been a key mechanism for ensuring that all members of our community have equal access to quality and nutritious food, despite their socioeconomic status. I’m very grateful for the service expansion opportunity that we now have thanks to this grant.”
With the ABFHA grant, the City of North Miami will help increase the pantry’s current food storage capacity and provide adequate food for residents in need of food delivery service through the NoMi Food Pantry. With the grant, North Miami plans to expand the pantry’s physical space, and rent a monthly refrigeration truck to increase the amount of fresh produce delivered to residents throughout the community.
Founded in 2019, the City of North Miami’s NoMi Food Pantry’s objective is to end hunger and poverty in North Miami, by transforming lives through promotion of healthy eating and nutrition. Additional information about the NoMi Food Pantry’s ABFHA Grant is available online.
