City of North Miami Unveils Exciting Lineup of Black History Month Events

The City of North Miami is proud to announce its 2025 Black History Month celebration lineup featuring a vibrant series of events honoring the culture, history, and contributions of African Americans. This year’s events offer something for everyone, from educational workshops to family-friendly activities and engaging performances. Residents and visitors are invited to join the City in paying tribute to Black heritage and embracing the 2025 theme, "African Americans and Labor." 

Highlights of the month-long celebration include:

  • 2025 Black History Month Poster Contest
    The "African Americans and Labor" Poster Contest invites students in grades K-12 to showcase their creativity while reflecting on the theme, which highlights the historical and present-day contributions of African Americans to labor movements, industries, and workplaces. Participants will compete in three categories with exciting prizes: Elementary School (Grades K-5) winners will receive an Amazon Max 11 Tablet, Middle School (Grades 6-8) winners will receive an iPad with Apple Pencil, and High School (Grades 9-12) winners will receive Apple AirPods Max. Posters must not exceed the size limit of 22” x 28” and must be original, hand-created artwork; digital posters are not accepted. Submissions are due by Jan. 31, and will be judged on creativity, adherence to the theme, and artistic quality.     Celebrate Black History Month and the art of storytelling through textiles! Join us as we explore Faith Ringgold's inspiring work. This event is a unique opportunity to discover the beauty of textile art and create your own narrative-driven textile collage, enriching your understanding of Black History and culture.   • Sunday Stories

    Families will enjoy a powerful read-aloud of "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou and unleash their creativity by painting bold, Basquiat-inspired dinosaurs. Each child will also receive a free children's book courtesy of the Miami Book Fair's Books for Free Program. Books are available while supplies last—don't miss out!   • Black History Month Kick-Off: Panel Discussion & AfriKin Art Expo

    This engaging panel discussion, titled "Bridging the Intergenerational Gap in the Workforce," will feature speakers sharing insights on Black History, culture, and the workforce experience, focusing on generational differences and opportunities. The event will also include an art exhibition by AfriKin titled, "FREEDUMB: Freedom for Dummies." 
  • Awkward Dinner: Exploring Caribbean Legacy and Identity
    Wednesday, February 5, 2025 | 6:00 to 9:00 PM | MOCA Paradise Courtyard, 770 NE 125th Street, North Miami, FL 33161

    Through food and guided dialogue, participants are invited to explore topics relevant to MOCA's current exhibition by Andrea Chung and themes specific to our South Florida environment. The limited-capacity event includes a tour of Andrea's work for context, followed by a catered meal and conversation led by South Florida People of Color (SFPoC). RSVP
  • Line Dancing Classes

    Fun and energetic classes teach popular line dances from the African American community. Through rhythm and movement, these classes promote fitness, cultural expression, and community bonding. Popular fitness and dance enthusiast, Ms. Curtis, will lead each class. 
  • Get in Gear Community Bike Ride

    Join us for a community bike ride in honor of Black History Month. This event welcomes riders of all skill levels to enjoy a scenic ride through the City of North Miami, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for Black History and culture. 
  • MOCA Makers: The Mundane As Magic With Lysz Flo

    Delve into the everyday magic of art and food as we explore powerful forms of ritual and healing. Inspired by Andrea Chung's exhibition "Between Too Late and Too Early," Poet Lysz Flo will guide us through a collaborative workshop focused on the histories of particular foods and generating thoughtful recipes.   • Black History Month Council Meeting Reception

  • Storytime with Children's Book Author Tami Charles

    Spend an inspiring afternoon with children's author Tami Charles as she shares her journey and the stories behind her work. Ms. Charles will also give away free copies of her book 'Freedom Soup' and host a tasting of the renowned Haitian soup Joumou. 
  • NoMi Beats and Bingo Brunch

    Get ready for a vibrant afternoon of music, bingo, and community at an event that promises fun, entertainment, and great vibes.
