Vice Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D. Presents Recommendation to Create a Citizen Investigative Board

June 9, 2020

Vice Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D., initiated a discussion to establish a Citizen Investigative Board (CIB) during today’s virtual regular council meeting. The overall goal of the CIB is to provide transparency, impartial feedback and community oversight to the North Miami Police Department.

"Today, we began the conversation to create an independent board, the Citizen Investigative Board (CIB), in the city of North Miami. As the sponsor of this proposed legislation, I intend for this board to improve the trust and relationship between the North Miami Police Department (NMPD) and our local community. This critical step to establish the CIB would help to ensure that trust, transparency and accountability are evident to the community. It is my hope and intention that this ordinance will become law, effective July 14, 2020, and is fully implemented by the next fiscal cycle. I am very proud of the progress our Police Department has made within the community, but we still have a long way to go, and hopefully soon, we will be one step closer" said Desulme.

The CIB would be composed of qualified North Miami residents, with one appointment from the Mayor, City Council members and Police Chief. Specific guidelines and criteria will be established for individuals interested in applying. Together, the CIB will join forces with the NMPD and present recommendations to the North Miami City Council. The concept and structure of the board will be outlined within the coming weeks. The creation of the CIB will need to be approved by the North Miami Mayor and City Council.
