After taking a few days to reflect on the recent acts of violence and hatred, both here in the United States and abroad, I felt it was important to speak with clarity, purpose, and responsibility. Moments like these require more than an immediate reaction; they require thoughtful leadership and an unwavering commitment to confronting hate in all its forms.
I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless act of gun violence that occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire Brown University and Providence communities as they navigate this painful and difficult moment.
As a member of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Mayors Advisory Committee, where Providence Mayor Brett Smiley serves as Chair, I personally reached out to Mayor Smiley on Saturday evening to express our thoughts, prayers, and solidarity. No community should have to endure the trauma and fear that results from acts driven by hatred toward one group of people.
We are also facing heartbreaking news of another mass shooting in Australia. The global rise in violence connected to hate, extremism, and antisemitism is deeply troubling. These are not isolated incidents. They reflect a dangerous pattern that continues to threaten public safety and social cohesion worldwide.
Antisemitism is not merely a threat to Jewish communities; it is a threat to the moral fabric of our societies. When antisemitism goes unchallenged, it opens the door to broader violence, division, and instability. We must be clear and resolute in naming this hatred and confronting it wherever it appears.
This level of violence is unacceptable. I call upon community leaders, policymakers, and citizens everywhere to advocate for meaningful and specific measures that confront antisemitism, counter extremism, and increase public safety. Silence and inaction are not options when lives are at stake.
The City of North Miami stands in solidarity with all those affected. We will continue to promote compassion, unity, vigilance, and action during these challenging times.
Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D.
