[ARCHIVED] Neat Streets Miami-Dade County Awards Street Tree Matching Grant to the City of North Miami

City North Miami, Florida, June 27th 2022

In an effort to expand Miami-Dade County’s tree canopy by leveraging local resources, Neat Streets Miami-Dade County awarded the City of North Miami a Street Tree Matching Grant for its Neat Street Project in the amount of $11,600. In its sixth year, Neat Streets Miami-Dade County’s street tree program awarded 15 organizations matching grants to advance the Million Trees Miami-Dade County initiative, a community-wide effort to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy for Miami-Dade County.

“The Neat Street tree project provided North Miami the opportunity to participate in increasing its tree canopy to beautify its streets, mitigate urban heat and reduce stormwater runoff”- Christina Viala, North Miami Sustainability Administrator.

As part of this project, the City of North Miami has planted 40 trees of different species including Silver Buttonwood (9), Paradise Tree (7), Pigeon Plum (9), Gumbo Limbo (1), Dahoon Holly (8), Wild Tamarind (6). The trees are to provide shade and beautify the community. All the trees are native, hence adapted to the South Florida climate. Native trees require lower maintenance in the long term and may reduce stormwater runoff.

Made possible through the County’s Tree Trust Fund, preference was given to areas with low tree canopy and/or low-to-moderate income populations.
