North Miami Councilwoman Marie Erlande Steril is hosting a Celebration of Women in honor of National Women's History Month this Thursday, March 13th. The event will salute outstanding women in the community for their service and leadership. The event will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) courtyard, 770 NE 125 Street, Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 6 p.m.

National Women's History Month emerged from two significant events in history; the women's movement of the 1960's and the advocacy of female historians who demanded the inclusion of women in American history books. During the month of March, women from all walks of life are celebrated throughout the United States for their contributions throughout our nation's history.

Each year, women are honored for their contributions to the community or their field of work. This year’s honorees are:

  • Nadege Vilsaint – Community Spirit
  • Malou Harrison, President of Miami Dade College – North Campus  - Education
  • Lydie L. Obas – Faith-based Community
  • Jean Baptiste – Health and Human Services
  • Blanca Cobo - Volunteerism
  • Maureen Harwitz – Community Spirit

The following goodwill ambassadors will also be recognized:

  • Carla Clesca, Mayor - City of Kenscoff, Haiti
  • Yvanka Jolicouer Brutus, Mayor - City of Petion-Ville, Haiti
  • Dr. Fleurimonde Charles, City of Delmas
