North Miami, FL – 2/5/2014

Celebrating the 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

Each year, we recognize the month of February as Black History Month, but this year it has a special significance, as it is the 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the monumental Civil Rights Act of 1964. The city of North Miami will honor kickoff a month long of festivities with a Poetry Tribute night tomorrow, Thursday, February 6th  at 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), 770 NE 125 ST, inside the Paradise Courtyard.

The community is invited to attend this FREE event, which feature a variety of spoken word performances by over twenty members of the community, from professional spoken word artists to teens, City employees, including City Manager Stephen Johnson, and elected officials, including both Mayor Lucie M. Tondreau and Vice Mayor Scott Galvin. The event will be hosted by Will Escarment, with special tributes given to Rebecca “Butterfly” Vaughns and the late Will “Da Real One” Bell.

Join us on an emotional journey through our history as we explore the Civil Rights movement from its inception to the present, with a special emphasis on the 1960’s. Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and Poetry Tribute show begins at 6 p.m.

Additionally, MOCA’s galleries will be open through 8 p.m. where event attendees can explore the current exhibit by British artist Tracey Emin, “Angel Without You,” featuring over 60 works in neon. Details at mocanomi.org.
