North Miami, FL – 5/23/2012

North Miami, FL – May 23, 2012 – North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre, Esq., will host fellow members of the National Haitian-American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON) to conduct a press conference tomorrow, Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 2:15 p.m. to encourage the Obama Administration to implement a Haitian Family Reunification Program. The conference will take place at North Miami City Hall, 776 NE 125 Street – Council Chambers, second floor.

Mayor Joseph Champagne (of N.J.), Chair of NHAEON, will join Mayor Pierre, South Florida members of NHAEON and other leaders such as Marleine Bastien of Haitian Women of Miami (FANM), to urge the Obama Administration to expedite the parole into the U.S. of any of the beneficiaries of family-based immigrant visa petition which the DHS has already approved. Despite DHS approvals, it is estimated that over 112,000 family members remain in Haiti, awaiting their official parole into the U.S.

It has been 28 months since the 7.0 earthquake shattered the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Haitians. Those that survived continue to suffer the aftershocks of the disaster, which include extreme poverty, lack of housing and reliable infrastructure, the decline in the nation’s economy, job losses, increase in diseases such as cholera and much more.

On April 10, 2012, the North Miami City Council unanimously passed a resolution “urging President Obama to immediately instruct U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano to initiate a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program…” Local governments throughout the nation have passed similar legislation. Two years ago, in June 2010, the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously adopted Resolution No. 43, which urged “parole for all Haitian beneficiaries of approved immigrant visa petitions and expedited consideration and approval of all pending immigrant visas.”

Mayor Pierre, Mayor Champagne and other leaders will address the media at the conference. A question and answer period will follow the initial announcements.
