DEDICATION OF DESILINE VICTOR VOTING WING AT THE NORTH MIAMI PUBLIC LIBRARY

North Miami, FL – 4/3/2013

The North Miami Library will be dedicating its new Desiline Victor Voting Wing on Monday, May 6, 2013. The new wing was appropriately named after the struggle of the 102 year old North Miami resident who went through such hardship to cast her vote during the presidential election this past October. Her story of patience and perseverance to stand in line for several hours went national, with help from President Obama as Ms. Victor sat proudly in the First Lady’s box at the State of the Union address. The dedication will occur at 10:30 a.m. at the North Miami Library, located at 835 NE 135 ST, North Miami, FL.

Ms. Victor went on to be recognized by her induction into the North Miami Hall of Fame on March 21, 2013 and has received numerous recognition since for her inspirational struggle to cast her vote. Her encouraging story was applauded and recognized by many including Senator Oscar Braynon, who said, “Mrs. Desiline Victor is a community hero, and it is essential that we recognize our community heroes for the contributions that they make to our society.”

Gihan Perera, the Executive Director of Florida New Majority, had this to say regarding this exciting day. “Desiline Victor is a hero for democracy and voting rights.  Her life story and determination to vote has become a symbol across Florida and the United States. Florida New Majority is proud to support the City of North Miami and Pierre Louis Mathieu on behalf of the Desiline Victor Foundation by dedicating this section of the building in her name as the place where democracy was denied and is now re-found.”

Marleine Bastien, Executive Director, FANM/Haitian Women of Miami and longtime advocate in the community declared, “at 102 years old, Desiline Victor stood tall to protect our rights to vote. She is most deserving of this designation which will remind generations to come that our voting rights are sacred and must never be trampled on”
