NORTH MIAMI MAYOR ANDRE D. PIERRE, ESQ. JOINS STATE SENATOR BRAYNON, FLORIDA NEW MAJORITY, AND SEVER

North Miami, FL – 2/22/2013

The story of Ms. Desiline Victor, 102 year-old voter from the North Miami community, who endured long wait lines during early voting for the last presidential election to make sure her vote was cast, has shined a national spotlight on Florida’s election system.  North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre, Esq. is joining with State Senator Oscar Braynon, Florida New Majority and several local leaders and organizations, such as Haitian Women of Miami (Fanm Ayisien Nan Miyami) and the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition, along with Ms. Victor, to introduce a bill that will protect and improve the right to vote in Florida at a Press Conference on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 11 a.m.

Sen. Braynon’s SB 888 – Desiline’s Free and Fair Democracy Act – helps modernize the state’s voting system and enshrines the fundamental right to vote into state law.  The press conference will take place at the North Miami Public Library, 835 NE 132 Street, where Ms. Victor was forced to stand in line for hours before being able to cast her ballot. Her story drew national attention when President Barack Obama recounted her voting experience during the recent State of the Union address. Participating organizations will also announce a series of forums throughout the week focused on voting rights, culminating on March 5th with the statewide “Awake the State” rallies.
