North Miami, FL – 11/7/2012

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has chosen to honor North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art as one of ten recipients of this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries for service to the community. The National Medal was presented at a celebration at the White House in Washington, D.C. on November 14, 2012.

This latest award is the City’s fourth national recognition since 2009. It began with North Miami’s designation as an ACHIEVE community, which stands for Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental ChangE. The program is administered by the National Park and Recreation Association and the Centers for Disease Control in order to foster healthier communities that work to combat chronic disease and tobacco use. In 2010, North Miami was one of ten in the nation to win the All-America City award, which honors communities for innovation, inclusiveness, civic engagement and collaboration. And in 2012, the City was named a Playful City USA, by KaBoom for its strong efforts to encourage families to be active through organized recreation programs and passive parks.
