North Miami, FL – 11/1/2019

Thursday, October 31, 2019, the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) announced that the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) of North Miami has been awarded reaccreditation, the highest national recognition afforded to museums throughout the nation. Accreditation stature exemplifies MOCA’s commitment to meeting National Standards and Best Practices for U.S. Museums through 2028.

The Alliance Accreditation Commission commended MOCA for the restructuring of its board, policy creation and development initiatives, which will position MOCA for greater financial growth. Accreditation is a very rigorous, but highly rewarding process that examines all aspects of a museum’s operations. To earn accreditation a museum first must conduct a year of self-study, and then undergo a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. AAM’s Accreditation Commission, an independent and autonomous body of museum professionals, considers the self-study and visiting committee report to determine whether a museum should receive accreditation. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, over 1070 are currently accredited.

“This is indeed great news for MOCA and our North Miami community,” said Philippe Bien-Aime, Mayor of North Miami. “After a yearlong reaccreditation process, and years of growing pains, MOCA is on the rise once again. As a MOCA board member and Mayor of the great City of North Miami, I stand ready to support MOCA and its commitment to excellence in the museum community. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all who played a role in seeing this honor through to completion.”

“The marathon began with Chief of Staff Natasha Colebrook-Williams, who initiated the race. Then the baton was passed to MOCA Director Chana Sheldon, who finished the race. Congratulations to the entire MOCA team for their hard work and dedication,” said North Miami City Manager Larry M. Spring, Jr., CPA. “I would also like to commend the new MOCA Board of Trustees for their efforts in securing this accomplishment, and our Mayor and City Council, for not only providing me with the opportunity to lead this process, but providing the political and financial support to see it through fruition.”
