NORTH MIAMI’S ANNUAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS

North Miami, FL – 9/25/2019

NORTH MIAMI’S ANNUAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS CONTINUES WITH BOOK SIGNING AT THE NOMI LIBRARY AND ENDS WITH LA GRAN FIESTA

The city of North Miami invites you to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our free family-friendly events and activities focused on Latino culture, history, traditions, cuisine, music, art and more!

The City of North Miami’s 2019 Hispanic Heritage Month Committee planned a variety of festivities throughout the months of September and October, with your entire family in mind. The month-long celebration began with Celebrity Storytime @ The Library with Soraya Trujillo, Assistant Principal of Holy Cross Lutheran School and an Art Unveiling showcasing the work of Cuban painter, author and illustrator, Margarita Cano.

North Miami’s Mayor and Council recognized Cano with a proclamation during the special presentations segment of the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Throughout Cano’s work, the tension between surface ornamentation and three-dimensionality is enhanced by the rich jewel-like finish that belies the presence of the brush. This tension strengthens the narrative content of the work. It is in the storytelling that Cano invites the viewer to partake in her memory and her magic. The art unveiling reception was sponsored by Pinecrest Bakery and Mimmo’s Mozzarella.

On Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m., the North Miami Public Library will host a Book Signing with NJ Perez, author of Heart of a Cuban: Refugee to American Hero. The Library also will host a Puppet Show for students from area schools, along with Latin-themed Cooking Classes and Art Workshop for teens.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA), will present an expanded event as part of its Jazz at MOCA series on Friday, Sept. 27 including a performance by singer Leslie Cartaya, a panel discussion and O, Miami.

Network over lunch with local business professionals at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will include Latin inspired music, art and dance. Luncheon tickets are available for purchase by calling 305-891-7811 or visiting www.northmiamichamber.com. This event will take place at the Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami Shores, FL.

North Miami’s 6th Annual La Gran Fiesta will take place Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m., at MOCA Plaza. La Gran Fiesta will be hosted by nationally acclaimed radio personality, Enrique Santos, and will feature live musical performances by David Lucca Y Los Clasicos De La Salsa, Mariachi Los Mensajeros, Viva Hora Loca & Fraternidad Bolivianos Unidos de Miami. This free festival under the stars also will feature non-stop Latin and Spanish dancing, folkloric performances, games, Latin culinary flavors, giveaways and more.

The top sponsors for the City of North Miami’s 2019 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration are Descarga Brewing Company, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA), the Friends of the North Miami Public Library and WastePro of Florida, Inc.
