North Miami Councilwoman Mary Estimé-Irvin invites the community to the City of North Miami’s 2019 District 3 Back to School Event. Presented in partnership with Florida State Representative Dotie Joseph, and Miami-Dade County Public School Board Member, Dr. Steve Gallon, III, this free event kicks-off at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at North Miami’s Griffing Park, 12220 Griffing Blvd.   

More than 500 backpacks filled with school supplies will be donated to local children. Plus, family health services and resources will be available. All resources are available on a first come, first served basis.   

DJ Griot will serve as emcee. This event also will feature entertainment, complimentary refreshments, a kid’s zone, games, free on-site haircuts for boys and free hairstyle vouchers for girls. On-site health resources will be available for participating families, including blood pressure and glucose screenings, STD testing, vision testing by America’s Best, and physical examinations. Dental hygiene resources also will be available. Representatives from various local outreach organizations and City of North Miami departments will be on-hand to share important information with guests.   

Award winning children’s book author, Edwidge Danticat will be present leading engaging story time sessions with children. Retired San Francisco 49s Defensive End and Miami Native, Elvis Dumervil, will also make an appearance with additional donated backpacks in tow.    

“Ensuring that our youth are well equipped to learn on the first day of school is definitely one of my priorities,” said North Miami’s District 3 Councilwoman, Mary Estimé-Irvin. “We all know that ‘It takes a village to raise a child;’ and I am proud that our City is at the forefront of making sure that our children have exactly what they need to achieve academic success. Education transforms lives!” 

“As a member of the North Miami community, we have a shared interest in ensuring that all of our kids are prepared for a successful school year and an even brighter future,” said Florida State Representative, District 108. “I am honored to partner with Councilwoman Estimé-Irvin and Miami-Dade County School Board Member, Dr. Steve Gallon, III, on this Back to School Event. I look forward to all of the food, fun and fellowship we will have on August 3!”
