CELEBRATE LIBRARIES WITH ALA PRESIDENT
LOIDA GARCIA-FEBO AT THE NORTH MIAMI PUBLIC LIBRARY’S BLACK HISTORY MONTH ART
OPENING
The
City of North Miami’s 2019 Black History Month Celebration will kick-off this
Friday, Feb. 8, with a Welcoming Reception and Art Opening. The NoMi Library
will host a special welcome reception for
American
Library Association (ALA) President, Loida Garcia-Febo. The welcome
reception is in conjunction with the 2019 Black History Month Art Exhibit, As
A Matter of Black: A Seat at the Table, curated by
MUCE 305.
The
North Miami Public Library was one of five libraries selected nationwide to be
part of a cross-country tour in support of ALA’s national campaign, “Libraries
= Strong Communities.
“As
cornerstones of democracy, libraries empower users to make informed decisions
by providing free access to information,” said Garcia-Febo. “Libraries provide
more than just books. They support community engagement and the delivery of new
services that connect closely with patrons’ needs. As libraries transform, we
should seize every opportunity to showcase their magnificent work.”
Amy
Johnson, Director of the Florida State Division of Library and Information
Services added “This is an extraordinary privilege and a rich
opportunity for a Florida library to demonstrate the many ways we seek to
transform and meet the everyday needs of our community.”
As a Matter
of Black is an annual
exhibition curated by Bart Mervil of the Miami Urban Contemporary Experience.
The exhibition will explore the significance of having a seat at the table.
Five visual artists will present their perspective on having a seat at the
table: socially, economically, politically, and casually within the context of
the black life experience.
