INAUGURAL SESSION OF MAYOR SMITH JOSEPH’S NORTH MIAMI YOUTH CITY COUNCIL TO COMMENCE

North Miami, FL – 10/30/2018

With election season in full swing across the nation, a unique election is set to take place in the City of North Miami, with a focus on the local youth perspective. Members of the public are invited to witness the first session of Mayor Smith Joseph’s North Miami Youth City Council, on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 6 – 9 p.m. at North Miami City Hall. The session will include youth networking, a program overview, messages from North Miami’s elected officials and the election of a Youth Council Chairperson.

This new initiative was launched by North Miami Mayor, Dr. Smith Joseph, to prepare a generation of civically engaged and socially aware youth within the City, who possess an awareness of the important role of local government.   The Youth City Council will consist of students representing four North Miami area high schools and a collegiate level Chairperson from one North Miami area university. Participating schools include Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School, North Miami Senior High School, MAST Academy, Florida International University, Barry University and Johnson and Wales University.

“North Miami’s local government affects the day-to-day life of our Youth City Council members and their families,” said Joseph. Today’s high school and college students are this city’s leaders of tomorrow. I welcome their participation and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing this program take off and positively impact our young people.”

Youth City Council members will engage in local governmental decision making processes, through recommendations to the Mayor and Council and by participating in educational leadership training courses. Youth City Council members must also attend the City’s regularly scheduled council meetings and partake in City outreach initiatives.
