NEAT STREETS MIAMI GRANT ADDS 145 NATIVE AND FLORIDA FRIENDLY TREES IN NORTH MIAMI

North Miami, FL – 12/1/2017

In an effort to expand Miami-Dade’s tree canopy by leveraging local resources, Neat Streets Miami awarded the City of North Miami a matching grant for its Neat Street Project, which allowed North Miami to plant trees in the North Central area of the City along neighborhood swales and rights-of-way. Neat Streets Miami allocated $18,500 in grant funding. The City matched that amount to hire licensed landscape contractors to install 145 native and Florida-friendly trees with warranty, in canopy deficient rights-of-way in the City of North Miami.

To keep residents informed and equipped with resources about the benefits of trees, staff provided door hangers and educational materials to tree recipients. Native and Florida-friendly trees were planted along public rights-of-way, located in the following North Central areas of the City: NE 139th to NE 143rd streets between NE 7th and NE 16th avenues and NE 18th Avenue between NE 149th and NE 146th streets. The trees planted will provide shade, which can reduce energy demand on properties, enhance walking conditions for pedestrians, improve storm water runoff from roads and add aesthetic beauty and value to the community.
Neat Streets Miami, which launched the Neat Street Project tree planting program to help advance the Million Trees Miami Campaign, is a community-wide effort to plant one million trees and achieve a 30 percent tree canopy coverage by 2020 in Miami-Dade County.
