CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN THE CITY OF NORTH MIAMI

The city of North Miami invites you to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our free family-friendly events and activities focused on Latino culture, history, traditions, cuisine, music, trailblazers and more! 

Children, ages 6 and older, are invited to the North Miami Public Library to participate in a series of weekend art workshops, paying homage to the colorful and surreal design aesthetic of famed Columbian artist, Carlos Villabon. At each workshop, children will collaborate in designing a mural. Workshops will be facilitated by notable artist, Alicia Maria Vallejo. The completed mural will be prominently displayed at the North Miami Library until Oct. 31. Workshops are scheduled each Saturday from Sept. 28 to Oct. 14. Individual workshops are limited to 16 children each. Advance registration is required, by calling 305-891-5535. The North Miami Public Library is located at 835 NE 132nd Street, North Miami.

Friday, Sept. 29, the monthly Jazz at MOCA Concert Series will feature musical group Timba Con Cosa. Timba Con Cosa will delight the crowd at South Florida’s longest running free outdoor jazz concert series with exquisite musical arrangements, the debut of several unreleased tracks and renditions of well-known classic Cuban songs. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at MOCA Plaza, located at 770 NE 125th Street, North Miami.

North Miami’s 4th Annual La Gran Fiesta will take place Saturday, Oct. 7, from 7 – 10:30 p.m., at MOCA Plaza. La Gran Fiesta will be hosted by nationally acclaimed radio personality, Enrique Santos and will feature live musical performances by South Florida based, two-time Grammy Award winning salsa artist, Marlow Rosado. This free festival under the stars also will feature non-stop Latin and Spanish dancing, folkloric performances, games, Latin culinary flavors, giveaways and more. La Gran Fiesta is presented in partnership with the Descarga Brewing Company and North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

An art unveiling showcasing the work of notable Columbian painter Alicia Maria Vallejo, will be among the special presentations at the City of North Miami’s Oct. 10 City Council Meeting. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the North Miami City Hall, Council Chamber, located at 776 NE 125th Street, North Miami. At 6 p.m., light refreshments with a Latino flair will be served prior to the meeting.

Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 11:30 a.m. the city of North Miami will recognize some of our community’s most noteworthy leaders of Latino heritage at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. The Honorable Francis X. Suarez, City of Miami Commissioner, District 4, will give the keynote address. Attendees may also partake in a silent auction of several unique South Florida experiences, such as a two night stay at the Beachwalk Resort, cooking class for a group of 10 at Johnson and Wales University, dinner at Bonefish Grille, an Edible Arrangement, Amway beauty and household products and fitness classes.  Luncheon tickets are available for purchase by calling 305-891-7811 or visiting www.northmiamichamber.com. This event will take place at the Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami Shores.  

Friday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m., join the City of North Miami at the Color De Identidad Artist Reception, honoring Alicia Maria Vallejo. This free reception at the North Miami Public Library, will formally introduce the exhibition to the South Florida community. Color De Identidad will be displayed at the North Miami Public Library until Oct. 31. This event is made possible by the Friends of the North Miami Library.
