STATUS REPORT #1 FROM THE CITY OF NORTH MIAMI IN PREPARATION FOR HURRICANE IRMA

North Miami, FL - September 5, 2017 – On Monday, September 4, 2017, Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for all 67 counties within the State of Florida in response to Hurricane Irma. The North Miami Emergency Operations Center has been activated and pre-storm preparation has commenced. The city of North Miami would like to inform the public of the following in preparation for the possible arrival of Hurricane Irma: 
  • All City events are cancelled beginning Thursday, September 7, 2017, through Monday, September 11, 2017 
  • Sand bags (maximum of 6 per resident) will be available for North Miami residents only at the North Miami Motor Pool, 1855 NE 142 Street beginning Wednesday September 6, 2017 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. while supplies last. Entrance to the Motor pool is located on NE 143 Street. 
  • DO NOT TRIM TREES at this time.  Tree trimmings can become dangerous projectiles and the North Miami Public Works Department will not have the time or resources to schedule additional garbage or trash pick-ups throughout the City 
  • Regular Sanitation service will proceed as usual until further notice
  • All residents and business owners are to secure all loose objects indoors 
  • Construction materials are to be secured. Sheds must be tied down 
  • All dumpsters and port-o-lets must either be removed from the city of North Miami or securely covered and tied down
  • Catch basins:  Residents living near catch basins are strongly encouraged to clear them of leaves and other debris 
  • Current evacuation zones if an order is issued includes everyone east of the F.E.C. Railroad Tracks (between NE 14 to 16 Avenues) for a category 3 or higher hurricane 
  • North Miami Senior High School is the designated hurricane shelter for North Miami (13110 NE 8 Ave, North Miami, FL 33161) 
  • Michael Krop Senior High School is the designated Pet Friendly hurricane shelter (1410 NE 215 Street, Miami, FL 33179)
