FARMERS MARKET THRIVES IN DOWNTOWN NORTH MIAMI; OFFERS EXTENDED HOURS BEGINNING JANUARY 19TH

North Miami, FL – 1/9/2012

Market Open to the Public Each Thursday through March 29, 2012

Fragrant tomatoes, garden-fresh herbs, an assortment of plants and a variety of organic food and other products fill the MOCA Plaza in downtown North Miami every Thursday since the City launched the North Miami Farmers Market at the beginning of December. The market is currently open to the public from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thursdays. Beginning January 19th, the market will offer new hours of operation, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. through the end of March 2012.

The variety of vendors has grown since the market kicked off earlier this month. “This is yet another step in the direction of improving the overall health of our community,” explains Andrea A. Ramos, the City’s Special Events Supervisor, who also spearheads the City’s ACHIEVE healthy living initiative. “Access to fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy food selections is just one step towards the overall wellness of a community.” As a nationally designated ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental changE) community since 2009, North Miami has made significant strides towards the assessment and implementation of policies that focus on improving general wellness, reducing childhood obesity and chronic diseases.

The North Miami Farmers Market is held every Thursday in the MOCA Plaza, 770 NE 125 Street, (next door to North Miami City Hall), through March 29, 2012. Cash only.

Featured products include produce, plants, organic and baked goods; including ceviche, guacamole, Florida grass-fed beef, vegetarian lunch items and much more.
