NORTH MIAMI TO UNVEIL MIAMI-DADE COUNTY’S FIRST LGBTQ SCULPTURE

North Miami, FL – 3/4/2017

Elaine Gordon Enchanted Forest Park Saturday –Saturday, March 4th, 11 am

On Saturday, March 4th, the city of North Miami will unveil at the Elaine Gordon Enchanted Forest Park Miami-Dade County's first public installation celebrating the rich legacy of LGBTQ accomplishments.  The city will honor several icons whose contributions significantly advanced the rights, accomplishments, and culture of the LGBTQ community in North Miami and Miami-Dade County.

"Many people don't realize how often the struggle for countywide LGBTQ rights intersected with the city of North Miami," said Councilman Scott Galvin, who is openly gay.  "This is a chance for everyone to come together to celebrate a beautiful piece of art, as well as watershed moments."

Among the honorees slated to attend are former Dade County Commissioner Ruth Shack, Judge Victoria Sigler, Judge David Young, Safeguarding American Values for Everyone (S.A.V.E.), former North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns, and Florida State Representative David Richardson.  Former North Miami resident Frank Martin Gill, who led the fight to overturn the state’s ban on gays adopting children will also be in attendance.  With its recent Academy Award wins, the film Moonlight will also be feted.

The art piece celebrating the LGBTQ community was created by Miami native Alan Gutierrez.  It features eighteen poles, each representing the standard makeup hues used for special effects on stage and in film.  The piece was commissioned through North Miami's Art in Public Places program. Media is invited to attend and help celebrate the rich legacy of LGBTQ accomplishments. Please contact Natasha Colebrook-Williams for media credentials on event day at 786-774-9349.
