MAYOR SMITH JOSEPH CELEBRATES NINTH ANNUAL LITERACY WEEK, FLORIDA AT THE E. MAY AVIL NORTH MIAMI PU

North Miami, FL – 1/23/2017

This week, North Miami Mayor, Dr. Smith Joseph, joins the Just Read, Florida! Office, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE), the Office of Early Learning, school districts, early learning coalitions, and numerous other state agencies, for the ninth annual statewide Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida. Mayor Joseph, in partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Miami‐Dade/Monroe, will join over 100 preschoolers at the North Miami Public Library on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 beginning at 9:00 a.m. for a special reading of “I Don’t Want to Be a Frog.”  The event will include special character performances and each child will receive a free copy of the featured book.   

Florida Literacy Week: 

  • Weeklong event of literacy activities (January 23-27) with simultaneous reading scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 9 am. 

  • Statewide event: Students, families, community partners, early education providers, and stakeholders take part in a simultaneous reading of two books which are selected annually. 

  • Event is designed to encourage children and families to read from an early age to increase communication skills, socio-emotional bonds, and school readiness.
