NORTH MIAMI MAYOR, DR. SMITH JOSEPH, RAMPS UP SUMMER READING WITH LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES

North Miami, FL – 6/21/2016

Summer is the perfect time for students and families to unwind from the hectic school year, but it’s also a time when learning loss can occur. According to the United States Department of Education, “summer slide” occurs when children do not engage in educational activities during the summer months. This summer, everyone’s invited to “Take a Book, Leave a Book” at the NoMi Mayor’s Little Library and enter to win fabulous prizes, including Books, LeapPad, iPad mini, or Kindle, with the Library’s Summer Reading Program.

The unveiling of the first NoMi Mayor’s Little Library will take place on Wednesday, June 22nd at 10:00 a.m.  A new Little Free Library will sprout at the Mayor’s Monarch Butterfly Garden located in front of the Community Planning & Development office.  Little Free Libraries are spreading across the world bringing people together and creating communities of readers. The small, front‐yard book exchanges number 36,000 around the world in 70 countries — from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Each year, nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries. The city of North Miami will house six little free libraries at locations which includes: W. J. Bryan Elementary School between NE 12 Avenue and 127 Street and Sunkist Grove Community Center between NW 125 Street and 13th Avenue. Books for the libraries were donated by The Children’s Trust and the Early Learning Coalition of Miami Dade County and Monroe.

“The City-wide literacy movement began with me just taking an hour to read with students at the North Miami Library and now has transformed tremendously.  The idea to have these little libraries started with my wife, Patricia St. Vil-Joseph who’s an avid reader. It’s our hope that these Little Free Libraries will sprout everywhere as the project is embraced by neighborhoods, schools, homeowner associations, and businesses” said Mayor Smith Joseph.

The North Miami Public Library, with the generous support of the Friends of the Library and The Miami Foundation for a Greater Miami, offers an array of programs, activities, reading challenges, and incentives to make reading a community-wide family experience for all ages this summer. From newborns to adults, everyone’s invited to “Join the Game…Exercise your Mind…& Read.”  For more information on Summer Reading, visit the Library’s website at northmiamifl.gov/departments/library/events.aspx.
