North Miami, FL – 5/17/2016

On Wednesday, May 18th, North Miami Mayor, Dr. Smith Joseph, the City Council, City Manager, and Police Chief will welcome home Officer Niel Johnson from his notable visit at the White House. Officer Johnson was awarded the prestigious Medal of Valor from President Barack Obama on Monday, May 16, 2016. The Medal of Valor is the highest national honor awarded to a public safety officer who has exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect others from harm. Officer Johnson pursued a man who had shot at a City of Miami police officer and stole a police vehicle. Additionally, the subject shot two innocent victims as he fled in the police car.  Withstanding fire from an assault rifle, Officer Johnson returned fire, neutralizing the subject, and apprehended him. Officer Johnson is the first and only officer in the history of the North Miami Police Department to receive the Medal of Valor.  He was also awarded the Officer of the Year Award by the North Miami Police Department and the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police.
