On Thursday, May 5, 2016, Vice Mayor Alix Desulme, Councilwoman Carol Keys, Esq., Elected City Clerk Michael Etienne along with Senior City Staff will travel to the world’s most populous country to promote investment opportunities in the city of North Miami. The tentative itinerary includes meetings with government officials and business leaders in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai to discuss opportunities for commerce and to expand the City’s international relations efforts.  The visit from North Miami officials will lay the groundwork for the City’s designated Chinatown District and encourage Chinese companies to consider economic development opportunities in North Miami.

On February 23, 2016, the North Miami City Council unanimously approved a resolution designating 15 blocks along North West 7th Avenue between North West 119th Street to North West 135th Street as a Chinatown Cultural Arts and Innovation District. The Chinatown master plan once completed, will serve as a design guide to ensure the future growth of the community and would make North Miami the first city in the state of Florida to officially develop a Chinatown.

While in China, the delegation will attend Florida International University (FIU) Commencement Ceremony hosted by the Tianjin University of Commerce campus in China.  “FIU has strong communal ties in China, and a significant number of International Chinese students that attend FIU's North Miami Campus. Economic development for North Miami and the NW 7th Ave corridor is one of my top priorities.  This trip allows us to promote investment opportunities while strengthening our international relationships with China,” said, Vice Mayor Alix Desulme. The delegation will return to Miami on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.
