TREE INSTALLATION PROJECT COMPLETED WITH GRANT FUNDING FROM USDA FOREST SERVICE

North Miami, FL – 4/19/2016

North Miami is dedicated to enhancing the overall sustainability of its City and promoting environmental awareness in the community. As a Tree City USA designation recipient for 26 consecutive years, the City recognizes the important role that trees play in improving the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the community. On October 9, 2014, the city of North Miami was awarded $20,000 in matching grant funds from the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service through the Florida Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program. With $40,000 in total funding, a licensed landscape contractor installed 117 native and Florida-Friendly trees species throughout City and consultants from Legacy Arborist Services completed educational outreach to the community during the City’s council meeting and Tree Talk workshop.

On October 27th 2015, the Mayor and City Council unanimously approved the Street Tree Management Plan. The approval of the Street Tree Management Plan followed by public comments helped inform the community about the Plan’s purpose, which serves as an informative resource guide for canopy coverage analysis, street tree management, planting program strategies, and design recommendations to maintain trees in public places. Residents also received free trees during a “Tree Talk” workshop where they learned about the importance of tree management, environmental benefits of planting trees, plant selection, and how to properly install a tree.

A drive through North Miami will take you through neighborhoods with beautiful tree canopies which are essential to neighborhood beautification. The trees planted along City’s right-of-ways, will provide shade which can reduce energy demand on properties, enhance walking conditions for pedestrians, improve stormwater runoff from roads, and add aesthetic beauty and value to the community. The city of North Miami would like to express its gratitude to the USDA Forest Service, State political leaders, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Florida Forest Service for providing technical assistance and making a financial investment in the City’s Green infrastructure.
