North Miami, FL – 4/11/2016

This week, the E. May Avil North Miami Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating the dynamic changes that are happening in today’s libraries. April 10-16 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers.  The North Miami Public Library is kicking-off National Library Week with The Wonderful Feast: A Celebration of the Life and Work of Esphyr Slobodkina on Thursday, April 14th at 6:00 p.m. with storytelling, book sharing, a puppet show, and other activities. Author and abstract artist, Esphyr Slobodkina, created and donated the mural of the “The Wonderful Feast” to the Library on September 22, 1988.

Libraries of all types are evolving to meet the needs of the communities they serve. At the North Miami Public Library, transformation occurs every day.  Recently, the Library completed a $1.5 million dollar renovation of its interior space to provide meeting and study rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The Library’s makeover included a new colorful and playful children’s section, teen space, coffee shop, and landscaping to provide a welcoming exterior. The North Miami Public Library offers access to a variety of print, digital and online resources that users can access with their library cards, in person or online from home, including e-books, digital magazines, language-learning programs, movies, music albums, audiobooks, online databases, and more.

“Service to the community is the focus of the North Miami Public Library,” said Library Director Lucia Gonzalez.   “Libraries level the playing field for people of all ages who are seeking information and access to technologies that will improve their quality of life.”

Libraries are many things to many people. The North Miami Public Library collaborates with community organizations, small business owners, students, and the public at large to discover and address the needs of the community. Whether through offering e-books, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers, or offering a safe haven in times of crisis, libraries and librarians across the nation listen to the community they serve, and they respond.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country during the month of April.
