A FASTER TRACK FOR TECHNOLOGY IN NORTH MIAMI SCHOOLS

North Miami, FL – 3/7/2012

Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to support education in North Miami, the North Miami City Council approved a request from the City’s Quality Education Advisory Board (QEAB) last month to fund resources that will enhance instructional programs in the fourteen schools that are part of the City’s Educational Compact. The request will fund two instructional enhancement tools: LLC MimioTeach Interactive System at $32,312 and Thinking Maps at $36,879. The QEAB unanimously approved the recommendation to request funding for these items at its February 6th meeting.

The LLC MimioTeach System converts standard dry-erase boards into innovative instructional technology that allows for students to actively participate and interact with lessons. The MimioVote Assessment System enhances class participation by allowing for instant student feedback allows teachers to accurately measure and track student understanding. The proposal will fund one set per school (one MimioTeach device and 24 MimioVote handsets,) as well as onsite teacher training.

Thinking Maps is a common visual language for learning across all disciplines. Through this technology, students are empowered to identify strategic organizers to map out learning at their own pace. The program is intended to raise the students’ level of critical and creative thinking and dramatically impact student academic performance in all subject areas. It is currently in place in two North Miami schools. The funding will allow for this program to be implemented as a pilot program in selected grades at all North Miami Feeder Pattern schools.

In 2010, the City entered into an Educational Compact with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) in order to formally establish a partnership in education to bring together each organization’s collective resources for the greater benefit of North Miami students. The QEAB provides regular input and community guidance for the Compact.
