The Basement Project, a new theater company in residence at Museum of Contemporary Art, presents its inaugural production and the South Florida premiere of Boom, an epic and intimate dark comedy by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. Directed by The Basement Project's Artistic Director Oleg Kheyfets and featuring original live music by duo sensation Afrobeta (Cuci Amador and Tony Smurfio), Boom opens to the public on Thursday, January 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in North Miami and runs through Sunday, January 31.

Student tickets ($18.50) and early bird tickets ($25) are available now on Eventbrite, or thebasementproject.org, or by calling (305) 677-9200. Regular ticket prices (after December 27th)are available for $35. Boom ticket holders may also use their theater ticket for complimentary same day access to MoCA exhibits for Saturday (before the show) and Sunday performances (before or after the show). Free parking is available at MoCA immediately east, west, and south of the museum and handicapped parking is available behind the museum.

Boom stars Cuci Amador (Barbara), Nicole Fernandez (Jo) and Francisco Carreno (Jules). The production's set, made largely from recycled plastic, is designed by Alexander Solodukho. Costumes, designed by Kayce Armstrong, are also created from recycled materials and found objects. Additional members of the creative team include Ron Burns (lighting) and Afrobeta (book and lyrics).

Boom tells the story of two college students, Jo and Jules, who meet online then get together for an evening of "casual sex", but are thwarted by the apocalypse. Will their night of "meaningless sex" be ruined by the need to save the world? Or is mankind's fate in the hands of someone watching from the outside?

" We are thrilled to present the South Florida premiere of Boom as the inaugural production for The Basement Project," says Kheyfets. "We chose Nachtrieb's Boom for our debut because of its immediate relevancy to South Florida. The show has great humor, yet raises important questions about mankind's legacy -- how will we be remembered millions of years from now?

"The world premiere for Boom was originally staged at the prestigious Ars Nova in New York City with subsequent productions at Woolly Mammoth Theater Company in Washington D.C., Seattle Rep,Cleveland Public Theater, and more than a dozen other companies around the country. The New York Times calls Boom “engaging with darkly funny dialogue." Other reviews include:

  • “A grandly wacked-out apocalypse fantasy, one of those charmed evenings.”- The Washington Post

  • “Uproariously funny. It’s literate, coarse, thoughtful, sweet, scabrously inappropriate, wracked by existential anxiety, and wonderfully humane...this is one end-of-the-world story that’s likely to leave you grinning from ear to ear.”- The City Paper

  • "I would definitely recommend grabbing your ticket to Boom." - nyctheater.com

Boom is a production of The Basement Project with support of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Inc.,and The City of North Miami. For more information about Boom, or to purchase tickets, visit thebasementproject.org or call (305) 677-9200.
