Status Report from the City of North Miami in Preparation for Tropical Storm Erika

North Miami, FL – 8/28/2015

Governor Rick Scott has declared a State of Emergency for the state of Florida. The City of North Miami would like to inform the public of the following in preparation for the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Erika:

  • City of North Miami administrative offices will remain open until a determination is made by Miami Dade County.
  • The North Miami Public Library, located at 835 NE 132 Street, will be closed as of Saturday, August 29th at 2 p.m. and all programs have been canceled for the day, in order to prepare for the storm’s arrival.  The library will reopen at the earliest possible chance once the storm has passed and the facility has been prepared to re-open to the public.
  • All North Miami Parks and Recreation Department programs have been cancelled and facilities will be closed as of Saturday, August 29th at 4 p.m. until further notice.
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art (located at 700 NE 124 Street) will be closed to the public on Sunday, August 30th until further notice.
  • DO NOT TRIM TREES at this time.  Tree trimmings can become dangerous projectiles and the North Miami Public Works Department will not have the time or resources to schedule additional garbage or trash pick-ups throughout the city.
  • Sanitation service will be suspended, once sustained winds reach 39 mph or higher.  Stay tuned for updates.
  • Recycling service will proceed as regularly scheduled on Saturday, August 29th.
  • All residents and business owners are to secure all loose objects indoors.
  • Construction materials are to be secured by guying and shoring.  Sheds must be tied down.
  • All dumpsters and port-o-lets must either be removed from the City of North Miami or securely covered and tied down.
  • Catch basins:  Residents living near catch basins are strongly encouraged to clear them of leaves and other debris.
  • Sand bags (maximum of 6 per resident) are available for North Miami residents only at the North Miami Motor Pool, 1855 NE 142 Street. Proof of residency is required.

The City will continuously monitor the path of the storm and advisories will be given on a daily basis. North Miami Residents should stay tuned to local television and radio advisories, Progress TV-77, (North Miami’s Municipal Cable Channel) or contact the 24-hour automated information line, North Miami INFO, at 305-891-4636.
