North Miami, FL – 5/1/2012

North Miami, FL – May 1, 2012 – The City of North Miami will honor Dr. Larinus “Larry” Pierre for his leadership and advocacy at a special presentation tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2nd, at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will be held in the Council Chambers of North Miami City Hall, 776 NE 125 Street. Dr. Pierre will be inducted into the City’s Citizens Hall of Fame as part of the opening ceremonies for Haitian Heritage Month.

After graduating from the Université d’Etat d’Haiti with a doctoral degree in Medicine in 1983, Dr. Pierre spent a year working in a community clinic in Cazale, outside of Port-au-Prince, and as an assistant to a well-known cardiologist in Port-au-Prince. In 1984, he attended a special training program in Internal Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. While in training, Dr. Pierre served as consultant for a number of public health projects in Haiti. Since 1985, Dr. Pierre has become active in HIV/AIDS research at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Pierre quickly became an advocate for South Florida’s Haitian community, and the multiple social and health challenges it faces.

In 1989, he and colleagues from the University of Miami, founded the Center for Haitian Studies (CHS) in Little Haiti. CHS is the main provider of health and social services to the underserved Haitian population. Under the leadership of Dr. Pierre, CHS’s programs have saved thousands of lives and brought over $30 million of services to the community in its 23 years of existence.

A lunch reception sponsored by Piman Bouk Restaurant will immediately follow the presentation. To RSVP, contact the Office of the Mayor and City Council at 305-895-9815.
