North Miami Public Library is one of ten sites in the nation
selected for the StoryCorps @ your library project

The E. May Avil North Miami Public Library is one of ten public libraries in the United States, (the only one in the state of Florida), selected to participate in the national StoryCorps @ your library program.

Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and administered by the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with StoryCorps, the StoryCorps @ your library program is an oral history project that utilizes one-on-one interview methods utilized within the public libraries to capture the community’s rich history.

Library staff and community volunteers will receive training on interview collection, digital recording techniques and archiving.  The grant also provides the library with a stipend to cover project expenses, portable recording equipment, assistance and technical support from StoryCorps staff; as well as access to and use of StoryCorps’ proprietary interview database.

More than 300 libraries applied for the 10 StoryCorps @ your library spots. Winners were selected through a peer-review process.  “Libraries clearly have a finger on the pulse of their communities and are eager to document the unique histories of their patrons,” said ALA President Courtney Young. “We applaud this level of community engagement and hope libraries will take advantage of the additional programming resources ALA offers.”

StoryCorps’ mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, preserve and share their stories. Each week, millions of Americans listen to StoryCorps’ award-winning broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and stories are available online at

“This project is meant to capture the rich history of North Miami,” explains Library Director, Lucia Gonzalez, who also grew up in the City.  “It is such an exciting project to work on, one that captures our community’s history through intimate storytelling and interviews, and for our staff to catalog and forward those interviews to be archived in the Library of Congress, it is such a great opportunity for all of us to be a part of this project.”

Volunteers are needed as interviewers and facilitators for the StoryCorps @ the library project.  Interested volunteers should attend the Community Orientation on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, 5 – 7 p.m. at North Miami City Hall, 776 NE 125 Street, inside the Council Chambers located on the second floor.  For details on the project, contact the North Miami Public Library at 305-891-5535. # # #
