North Miami, FL – 6/21/2012

North Miami, FL – June 21, 2012 – At the 80th Annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) held last week in Orlando, Florida, North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre, Esq. proposed a resolution to once again urge President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program.

Resolution No. 39 is a follow-up to Resolution No. 43, also sponsored by Mayor Pierre and adopted by the USCM in June 2010. It calls for the Obama Administration to expedite the parole into the U.S. of any of the beneficiaries of family-based immigrant visa petition which the DHS has already approved. Despite DHS approvals, it is estimated that over 112,000 family members remain in Haiti, awaiting their official parole into the U.S.

It has been 28 months since the 7.0 earthquake shattered the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Haitians. Those that survived continue to suffer the aftershocks of the disaster, which include extreme poverty, lack of housing and reliable infrastructure, the decline in the nation's economy, job losses, increase in diseases such as cholera and much more.

In addition to the USCM resolution, local governments throughout the nation have passed similar legislation. On April 10, 2012, the North Miami City Council unanimously passed a resolution "urging President Obama to immediately instruct DHS Secretary Napolitano to initiate a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program…" On May 24, 2012, Mayor Pierre and several other members of the National Haitian-American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON), including current Chair, Mayor Joseph Champagne (N.J.), hosted a press conference in North Miami urging Congress to take action immediately.
