Welcome to the Mayor and Council Office - District 4 - NoMi’s Golden Silver Senior Program

Background:
According to the World Health Organization, between 2015 and 2050, seniors living over 60 years old will nearly double from 12% to 22%. By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger than five years old. Florida has the largest senior population in the US according to the Census.

By 2020, Florida is expected to have a population of more than 23.5 million, and people over 60 will make up at least 28 percent of the population.

Research shows that older adults participating in senior center programs learn to manage and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental, and economic well-being.

More and more North Miami residents are living longer; Data suggests if an individual reaches 65 years of age, the person will probably live until 85. An estimated 10% or more of North Miami’s population are over the age of 65 years old. September 30, 2015, the North Miami city council unanimously funded a senior program managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. It is a big step in preparing for the transformation of an Age-Friendly city.
