Lives in North Miami with his partner of  
24 years and their five year-old
daughter. Graduate of Miami Edison High School 
and Miami Dade Community College

Born and raised in the North Miami area, Kevin received a “Silver Knight” award for community involvement for his work to landscape the North Miami Police Department and the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce.

As Mayor of North Miami since May 2005, his administration has focused on education. He is most proud of an agreement that the City has entered into with the Miami-Dade County School Board that will bring four new schools to North Miami by 2010. He has also worked on countless initiatives to improve North Miami's business community such as stricter code enforcement and resurrecting the façade improvement funded by CDBG.

Mayor burns is currently the Chairman of the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce, a position that he was voted into by fellow chamber members in September 2006.
