City Receives National Recognition as One of Ten All-America Cities in 2010

The city of North Miami is proud to be selected as a 2010 All-America City. Hosted annually by the National Civic League, the All-America City award honors communities throughout the nation that exemplify positive change by bringing the community together.

Each year, only ten cities are selected as All-America Cities, based on a strict qualification process. Each finalist must demonstrate that their residents are actively engaged and that the community is dedicated to resolving issues through collaborative efforts. The criteria upon which cities are judged include civic engagement and collaboration, inclusiveness, innovation and impact.

“We are excited,” declared North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre, “This is a lifetime achievement award for North Miami. Our City should be very proud to be recognized among the best of the best communities across our great nation.”

· 2010 Census awareness efforts to increase North Miami’s participation in the census by striving to achieve a 100% count through a variety of community outreach strategies;

· The ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental ChangE) initiative, a national program for which the City’s Parks and Recreation Department was selected as one of ten agencies throughout the nation to participate in the program, which aims to spur policy change towards the prevention of chronic childhood diseases and to ultimately create a healthier community; and,

· The implementation of youth outreach programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami. MOCA strives to make contemporary art accessible to diverse audiences, especially underserved populations, by exploring the art of our time.

All twenty-five finalists competed for the All-America City award in Kansas City, Missouri, last week. The ten winners were announced on Friday, June 18th. North Miami was represented by a delegation of four, the smallest delegation to compete, but won the hearts of the judges and fellow communities. “We spoke from our hearts,” explained team leader, Miguel Seco. “We shared North Miami’s story and through our voices, we represented the people of our community.”
